What’s in Your Pantry?

Have you looked at the things stored in your pantry lately? Do you even know what’s in there?pantry picture

Since it’s all non-perishable foods, it’s possible that you don’t know what you have. I know there have been times when I have found some surprises in the pantry. Especially if my husband has been grocery shopping!

If you are starting a program to lose weight or eat healthier, you NEED to know what’s in your pantry.  So, do an inventory.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to eliminate as many of the unhealthy processed foods that are usually found in the pantry as you can. Or at least downsize it.

Conducting the Pantry Review

Step 1: Take out everything that you haven’t used in a while. It’s probably pretty old so ditch it. That should leave you some room.

Step 2: Look at what’s left and get rid of the packaged, processed foods. You know you have them, the boxed casseroles, potatoes etc. They are full of chemicals and preservatives that you don’t need. Kim Lyons has a rule, “if it will stay on the shelf longer than you will be alive, it’s probably bad for you.” Now I get that there are some things you can’t give up, especially if it’s your kids favorite, but do the best you can.

Step 3: Cereal! Again if you have kids this is tough. But look at the labels and choose the healthier option if possible. Really look at getting rid of the high sugar cereals. Oatmeal is a staple that can be fixed so many different ways. You can also get the quick cook so that you aren’t cooking it for a long time in the morning. And get creative, almost everything can be put in or on top of oatmeal.

Step 4: Stock up on spices in the pantry. Getting creative will allow you to explore new and exciting flavors. That always helps when you are dieting.

Step 5: Here’s a tip. Use jars  to store your stuff in the pantry. That way you can see what’s in there as well as how much you have. It’s also neater than a bunch of sacks or boxes.

A pantry review will open your eyes to what you are storing in there. Reorganize and restock with healthy, less processed foods. Your body will thank you.
